Chapter Nine

Heather

The days leading up to when I had to drop off the samples for the festival booth were a blur of too much. I’d done it on purpose, cramming in too much work, accepting too many called-in or texted-in orders. I’d doubled up on offerings for the guests at Heron Views. When I wasn’t actively baking or creating something in the kitchen, I was obsessing over my ads for help, skimming the applicants so far. And when all of that couldn’t preoccupy me enough, I asked Aunt Beth to ask her neighbor’s son to show me some houses. He was just starting out in real estate, the ink on his realtor license still drying, but I wanted to avoid going through the ones everyone already knew in town. That’d be a red-light way to announce I was officially house hunting.

I’d worked myself to the bone, piling too much on my plate.

And still, I couldn’t stop thinking about Logan. More precisely, I couldn’t stop overthinking and analyzing what we’d done.

Again.

The orgasm was somehow even better than the first time we’d crashed and burned at the B&B before it opened. Which was a cause of concern. Was sex with Logan only going to get better and better, making me more addicted than I already was? Or was it the pregnancy hormones skewing my horniness to this funky, all-over anxiousness of wanting to jump his damn bones every waking moment of my day?

I sighed, shutting out my thoughts as Mel and I walked away from the town’s council offices. Thank God Logan’s mom wasn’t at her secretarial post. Maybe out for lunch or something. The last thing I wanted to do was face her with the top-secret bombshell on my shoulders. It would have been impossible to keep a straight face as I looked her in the eye, likely blushing up a storm while thinking, You’re going to be a grandma, Mrs. Price!

I have got to tell him. Sooner than later. The longer I waited, the more he’d likely hate my dishonesty.

“Thanks for helping me carry it all,” I told Mel at my side.

Earlier this summer, we’d bonded over PMS. She’d started her period and consulted me since Jessie and Evie explained I was the expert in bad cycles. I’d already warmed up to her being in our lives when Jessie started dating her dad, but we were even closer now. The years between us could have made it more like a parent-kid connection. Instead, she was like the little sister I’d never had.

When she wasn’t reading, she’d flitted around at the B&B. Helping Jessie “garden.” Or accompanying Evie and Nina in the boredom of the front desk. Then being an extra set of hands in the kitchen. The last week—since the fire at the bakery—she’d been absent. Jessie explained she was helping him. How, exactly, I wasn’t sure. But I was nervous she might share the news of my pregnancy with him.

Come on. Stop putting it off. I’d flirted with the idea of telling him after the bake-off booth at the festival.
